Tile Tips for Your Bathroom Remodel

Hiring the right contractor can make or break your remodeling experience. Before signing a contract, ask these five essential questions to ensure you’re working with a reliable and experienced professional.

Tile! So many choices and decisions.

Ceramic or porcelain? Subway or straight stack? Matte or gloss? When you’re remodeling a bathroom, tile plays a huge role not just in how the space looks, but in how it holds up over time. It sets the tone for the whole project. And if you’re going to invest time and money into a remodel, it’s worth choosing something that’s going to last and actually work for how you live.

Function Comes First

Bathrooms are wet. That’s just a fact. So we always start by recommending tile that’s built to handle moisture. Porcelain and ceramic are tried and true choices. They're durable, easy to clean, and available in just about every style you can imagine.

Porcelain is the tougher of the two. It’s denser and less porous, making it a great fit for floors and high-traffic spots. Ceramic works well on walls or in lower-impact areas, and it’s usually easier on the wallet. Just keep in mind, ceramic is a bit softer, so it needs a solid, level surface underneath to avoid issues down the road.

Tile: Size Matters

If you’re working with a smaller bathroom, using large format tile, something like 12x24 or 18x18, can actually make the space feel bigger and cuts down on how much grout you’ll need to clean. Fewer lines, cleaner look.

In spots like shower floors, though, smaller tiles or mosaics are the way to go. The extra grout lines help with traction, which means less slipping when things get wet. We also recommend using a matte or textured tile in those areas to add even more grip.

For walls, you really can’t go wrong with classic subway tile. It’s timeless, affordable, and super versatile. Lay it horizontal, vertical, stacked, or in a herringbone pattern if you want to add a little flair.

The right tile choice can pull the whole room together and make sure your bathroom still looks great five, ten, even fifteen years down the line. Color, size, layout, and contrast all play a part in the overall feel of the space.

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s totally normal. We’re always happy to point you in the right direction based on your space, your budget, and how you want the place to feel. There’s no one size fits all answer, but with the right plan, we’ll help you land on a look that feels right and holds up for the long haul.
